The Story
Dick Dingus was a 10th-grade student in 1960 when he had a spiritually transformative experience during a Youth for Christ rally at a church. While sitting alone and listening to someone sing, a wave of euphoria washed over him. He felt out-of-this-world happiness, love, joy, and peace. This feeling lasted for months and made him feel like he was walking on air. He enjoyed his peer relationships and read the Bible with new understanding and enthusiasm. After this experience, Dick felt loved for the first time in his life. He wanted to share it with others. He attended Nyack Missionary College to train as a minister. He graduated from seminary and served as a pastor in the United Church of Christ for 26 years. He faced conflicts in churches but kept sharing spiritual messages. Later, he worked as a hospice chaplain for 15 years, using his studies of near-death experiences to comfort patients and families. He resigned to care for his adopted grandchildren. Now, he leads Strangers No More, a home-based group that discusses NDEs and spiritual topics, and he created a speakers bureau for NDE experiencers.
“and I felt love and joy and peace months after that it felt like I was”
The transcript describes a spiritually transformative experience (STE) during normal wakefulness with no medical crisis or unconsciousness, and relays second-hand NDE stories lacking any veridical perception claims—such as impossible sensory access to specific, verifiable external events or information. No attempts at verification, confirmed details, or timely reporting of such claims are mentioned, resulting in no evidential strength for veridical perceptions.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
