Eben Alexander - Thriving in the Heart of Consciousness (excerpt)

The Story
Eben Alexander, a neuroscientist, experienced a near-death event during a seven-day coma caused by bacterial meningitis that severely damaged his neocortex. During the NDE, he first lost all personal memories and had no sense of his life or beliefs. He viewed the world from an earthworm's perspective in a muddy realm. A spinning white light then appeared and led him through a gateway to an ultra-real valley with lush vegetation, colorful flowers, dancing beings, playing children, joyful dogs, sparkling waterfalls, and swooping angelic orbs that chanted hymns. Deeper, he entered an infinite realm of unconditional love and heard a divine resonance called the Sound of All. After the NDE, Alexander regained his memories and rejected materialism. He embraced the idea that consciousness exists beyond the brain and that love binds the universe. He now shares his story, connects with mystics, and promotes NDE awareness through groups like IONS to foster global connectedness.
“to truly love others and to truly love God for as each and every one of us in”
This transcript describes a transcendent NDE during a severe coma but contains no veridical perception claims of physical events, conversations, or details from the medical setting. The high medical severity is offset by the complete absence of impossible-to-access perceptions, verifications, or specific verifiable details. Consequently, it offers no evidential strength for veridical perceptions.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
