Matthew Dovel - How to Survive a Distressing NDE
What Researchers Found
The Story
The person had two near-death experiences. At age 12, he drowned in a pool during a swimming accident at a friend's house. He turned face up in a brilliant white light, felt peace, had a brief life review, sped across the universe into more light, met Jesus in a white robe who grabbed his wrist and said he had work to do, then returned to his body by the pool. At age 25, he attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills and gin in a bird sanctuary. Flashes of light led him to a gray, foggy place, then free-fall into a dark cavern where his soul split into seven parts reliving pains he caused others from their perspectives over past, present, and future. After three days of terror, he was pulled out and sent back. After both NDEs, he gained empathy, telepathy, precognition, and abilities to fix electronics and help with grief. He founded a suicide prevention organization, wrote a book, and developed a four-phase procedure to remove depression and suicidal thoughts, using it to assist hundreds worldwide.
No corroborated veridical perceptions despite two NDEs involving unconsciousness from drowning and drug overdose; experiences consist of subjective spiritual visions (light, Jesus, hellish realms) without specific, externally verified details like observed events or objects. The claimed 'verifiable' cab sighting lacks described confirmation method or outcome, limiting evidential value.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
