Dr. Eben Alexander, A Transformative NDE
What Researchers Found
The Story
Evan Alexander, an academic neurosurgeon, had a near-death experience from severe gram-negative bacterial meningitis. This caused a deep seven-day coma with only a two-percent survival chance. During the coma, his life memories and knowledge vanished. He started in a primitive, coarse realm called the earthworm eye view. Then he moved through a spinning pure white light with a musical melody. He entered a brilliant gateway valley more real than Earth, with blooming plants, dancing souls, and a beautiful girl on a butterfly wing. He received reassurances of love and care. His journey continued as space and time collapsed, passing angelic choirs to an infinite core of blackness overflowing with the creator's unconditional love, linked to the sound 'Om.' After returning, Alexander regained memories over weeks. He studied NDE literature and saw common themes across beliefs. He rejected his old view that the brain creates consciousness and adopted the idea that the brain filters it. He now meditates daily, develops tools for deep conscious states, writes books, and promotes unity through love and compassion to advance human understanding.
“sentient life not just humans not just life on Earth but all of sentient life throughout the cosmos as participating in this beautiful journey together but”
This NDE features an extreme medical crisis with non-functioning neocortex during deep coma, providing strong evidential context for consciousness surviving brain impairment. However, it contains no veridical perceptions of real-world events, conversations, or details, consisting entirely of internal, visionary otherworldly experiences with zero claims of impossible sensory access, specificity, verification, or corroboration.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
