The Story
Art Payne was a naval officer and recruiter in Washington, D.C., in 1968. He suffered severe burns over 50% of his body when gasoline ignited while he rebuilt his car's carburetor during a date. During the NDE, his life flashed before his eyes, starting as a lower life form like an amoeba, progressing through evolution to fish, land creatures, monkeys, and humans, then his own life as a baby and adult. He entered a place of infinite happiness with a swirling white light and bodiless souls who welcomed him and urged him toward the light. He saw his future, negotiated with the beings to return, and promised to forget it. He viewed his burning body from outside, then returned in pain and saw his girlfriend Patty. After the NDE, Art recovered in Bethesda Naval Hospital for four months. He married another woman, raised a family, and became a renowned marine painter in Maine. He gained strong faith in life after death, fears no death, and notices frequent reassuring coincidences.
