The Story
Mary McDermott, a lifeguard and surfer from near New York City, had a near-death experience on Christmas Eve 1998. It happened during an assault by Tom, a man she knew from her surfing group, while they drove in South Jersey. Tom beat her repeatedly and tried to strangle her after drinking alcohol and stopping his schizophrenia medication. During the attack, Mary left her body. She watched the scene from across the road and felt at peace. She saw her body in a red coat with an arm at a strange angle. She realized the body is just the outside shell, but the true self is eternal and perfect. Two boys in a car approached, startling Tom and allowing her to escape.
