The Story
Justin Burkholz, a restaurant manager in Seattle, had a near-death experience in January 2015 after a car accident. He pulled out of a parking lot into fog and rain, and a truck hit his driver's side at highway speed. This caused a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and broken bones in his face and ribs. In the ambulance, he went in and out of consciousness, experiencing only blackness and fear of death. Then, he felt an overwhelming certainty that he would survive and cried tears of joy. Two years later, during a healing procedure for lingering pain, he had an out-of-body experience. He saw his body on the bed and a bright light everywhere. A presence communicated realizations about fixing his posture, breaking negative thought cycles, and ending self-inflicted suffering. After the accident, Burkholz took his health seriously, eating better and starting meditation and yoga. The second experience shifted him from atheism to spirituality. He studied various traditions, started a blog and YouTube channel, and wrote books on meditation, yoga, and spiritual habits.

This NDE lacks any veridical perception claims, featuring only subjective internal experiences like blackness, a bright light, and personal self-knowledge messages with no external verifiable details. The medical severity provides some context, but absence of impossible access, specific details, verification, or corroborated elements limits evidential strength entirely.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
