"The Door to Heaven Was Briefly Opened" | Wolfgang Nicolaus' Near-Death Experience
What Researchers Found
The Story
Mr. Nicolaus had a near-death experience in 1985 after attempting suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his car. He did this due to deep pain from discovering his wife's infidelity, worsened by childhood abuse. During the experience, he felt a release from pain and emptiness. A warm light approached, which he knew as his eternal companion named Jonas. Jonas showed him a vast panorama of life, where he understood all connections and meanings in overwhelming love. Jonas said he was not done yet and had something to find, then sent him back. After the NDE, he divorced his wife and faced financial struggles. He felt isolated, unable to share the experience for years. Later, he researched NDEs, joined a support group, and shifted from atheism. He now authors books and works in film to share insights, embracing his past traumas and finding purpose.
“I felt very warm and taken care of. This absolute love, which is often described, was not yet there.”
No veridical perceptions reported; the NDE consists solely of internal spiritual experiences (light, entity Jonas, life panorama) without any claims of observing physical events, people, or details during unconsciousness. Despite severe medical crisis (CO poisoning, defibrillation), lack of specific, verifiable, or confirmed elements limits evidential strength.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
