#334 - Peter Sees Purgatory In His NDE
What Researchers Found
The Story
Peter Fennell, a construction worker and former military member, had a near-death experience in July 2021 after a routine colon resection surgery failed. The reconnection leaked, causing sepsis. He was discharged too early, worsened at home, and returned to the ER. Doctors repaired the leak but caused more issues, leading to ICU admission with E. coli sepsis and acute septic shock. In the ICU, amid hallucinations and high fever, Fennell left his body and stepped through a dark doorway. A being guided him to a stone wall overlooking a purgatory-like area of suffering souls trapped by addictions, suicides, and malice, acting as a soul recycling center. He felt others' pain but glimpsed a light of clean, happy existence beyond, though he could not enter. He received a warning about suicide, linked to his father's death, and an information download removing his addictions. Upon returning during a seizure, he sensed a nurse's malicious prayer. After the NDE, Fennell quit heavy drinking and smoking without withdrawal, lost his onion allergy, and shifted to a pescetarian diet, gardening, and meditation. He battled PTSD from the trauma and medical negligence but found healing through Ayahuasca therapy in Costa Rica and Peru. He lost toxic friendships, reduced fear of death, and now shares his story to warn others and promote positive living.
“suicide my father chose to end his life you know it kind of instilled in me”
No veridical perception claims are present; the NDE consists of internal visionary experiences (purgatory, light, life warning) without any specific, verifiable details about real-world events or impossible perceptions. Medical severity is the only strong element, but lack of any corroborated observations limits evidential value.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
