The Story
Michelle Gurley was a college student aiming to become a medical missionary when a car accident caused her NDE. The night before her medical school interview, she turned left at an intersection in Knoxville, Tennessee. A Dodge Ram truck hit her car after she put it in park on an inner voice's guidance. During the NDE, she heard a loud crash and screamed. She floated upward in darkness with a neutral entity escorting her. She saw a bright room with shadowy figures like a cocktail party but did not enter it. Memories of her summer in Honduras and campus projects flooded back, making her feel interrupted like a child at play. She conveyed to the entity she had unfinished work and needed to return. She snapped back into her car, confused, patted her arms to check if alive, and got out as smoke filled the vehicle. Emergency services arrived, and both cars were totaled. After the NDE, Michelle completed medical school but never practiced medicine. She questioned her faith, left her conservative tradition, earned a Master's in Theological Studies from Duke, and pursued music as a mountain dulcimer player and songwriter. She now trains as a chaplain, using her experiences and music to help patients, while also farming and designing interiors. She dealt with lingering back pain and PTSD from the accident.
“i like put me back on earth put me back um because something inside me knew that if we made it to that place where this bright light was in these figures in”
This NDE lacks any veridical perception claims, featuring only vague, internal subjective experiences like floating in darkness toward a bright light with shadowy figures. No impossible observations of the physical world, specific verifiable details, or verification attempts are reported. The account is a classic but non-evidential spiritual journey without external corroboration.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
