The Story
Shane O'Sullivan was a 10-year-old boy in 1993 when he had a near-death experience triggered by a seizure while playing Mario Kart on a Super Nintendo console. During the experience, he blacked out and entered a fast-spinning purple tunnel that narrowed like a vacuum, leading to darkness. A small light grew into colorful strips of yellow, purple, and orange, forming a cylinder that turned green. He arrived in a magical kingdom with a crystal blue lake, green grass, and a white windmill across the water. An older presence, believed to be his grandfather, guided him by the shoulder. They walked, skimmed stones that created rainbows, and sat on a park bench. The presence told him he could not go further and had to return. He experienced a painful, fast return through the tunnel, viewed his house from above, saw his damaged tent and crying family, then reentered his body. After the NDE, Shane had no further seizures and no epilepsy. He remembers the event vividly and feels blessed. He gets tingles from seeing windmills or rainbows, strengthening his sense of connection to heaven. Sharing the story now helps him and others find meaning.
“heaven my father believed me and uh he's one of the only few that didn't believe”
The NDE features an OBE with specific perceptions of the home scene during unconsciousness from a seizure, including a damaged tent, empty bedroom, family in distress, and father's exact words, partially corroborated by the father's later confirmation. However, the medical crisis was not extreme (no cardiac arrest), the scene was somewhat predictable family reaction, verification was self-reported without independent witnesses to the pre-verification account, and perceptual access was limited to the same house.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
