The Story
Jim Brutin, an aviation enthusiast, experienced a near-death event after crashing his vintage aircraft on October 6, 2016. The engine failed during a test flight, causing him to hit trees at 70 mph. He suffered broken ribs, ruptured lungs, a fractured leg, and a back injury. Rescued by helicopter, he was intubated and placed in a medically induced coma for a week. During the coma, Brutin teleported to a ruined, gray cityscape on a building terrace under a stormy sky. He felt nausea and encountered an egg-shaped lattice sculpture with whirling sector gears representing future probabilities of thoughts, words, and actions. A disembodied voice explained it as the future birthing into the now and the in-between space between past and future. He viewed video feeds of potential futures, pulled out painful gears symbolizing bad choices, recalibrating his destiny. The voice discussed grace, letting go of attachments, interconnectedness, and being gentle in relationships. He removed alcohol from his future. Accepting this, he was returned to his body. After waking, Brutin quit alcohol, embraced letting go and detachment, adopted nonlinear thinking for deeper understanding, lived authentically with humility, and felt profound connections with other NDE experiencers. He now sees life as flowing in the present moment, beyond personal identity, focusing on presence and purpose.
This NDE features no veridical perception claims whatsoever, consisting entirely of a symbolic, otherworldly visionary experience involving gears representing future probabilities. Despite a severe medically induced coma, there are zero reports of perceiving real-world events, conversations, or details from an impossible vantage point that could be verified. The lack of any specific, verifiable elements across all criteria limits evidential strength.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
