Jim Bruton was an aviation enthusiast who built experimental aircraft. On October 6, 2016, his second plane, a reproduction of a 1933 French model, lost engine power during a test flight. He attempted an emergency landing near a boy scout camp but crashed into trees at 70 miles per hour. He suffered broken ribs, ruptured lungs, a mangled leg, a hole in his back, and a torn chin. Rescuers airlifted him to a trauma center, where doctors placed him in a medically induced coma. During the coma, Jim found himself in a gray, post-apocalyptic city under dark clouds. He approached an egg-shaped lattice sculpture filled with sector gears representing future probabilities of his thoughts, words, and actions.
