Lotte Valentin: An Atheist Gives Birth to Faith
What Researchers Found
The Story
Dr. Lahi Valentine, an atheist mother of three, had her first NDE in 1992 after severe postpartum hemorrhaging in the ER following the birth of her daughter. Her blood pressure dropped to 50/15, and she felt pulled out of her body. She floated above it, realized she was still herself without time, experienced peace and unconditional love, then got sucked back. The next day, she heard her deceased sister-in-law assure her everything would be okay. In 1994, during ongoing illness with bone marrow suppression, she had her second NDE at night when her head pounded and she was pulled out again. She tumbled through darkness to a middle station, heard beautiful music from angels in a bright white light representing divine source, met spirit guides who sent her back, and saw a glittery grid around Earth showing all connections. After these NDEs, she regained health slowly, developed intuitive abilities, studied shamanism and mediumship, entered medical school at 54, became a healer integrating science and spirituality, authored a book, and hosted a podcast.
“knowing that the light that light is God or Divine Source or whatever you want to”
No veridical perceptions of the physical world are reported during the OBE; experiencer floated above body but explicitly states no memory of seeing it or any specific details. Despite severe medical crisis with shock and critically low blood pressure, all perceptions were internal spiritual experiences without impossible sensory access or verifiable claims.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
