Mary Catherine Volk - The Experience and After-Effects of a Childhood NDE

The Story
Mary was a six-year-old girl who contracted measles encephalitis. This caused brain swelling and put her into a week-long coma in the children's hospital ward. During the NDE, she felt very sick and entered total blackness, feeling frightened and alone. She noticed a dim light in the corner and focused on it. The light grew brighter, revealing a long tunnel with a man at the end reaching out his hand. She floated toward him, felt tremendous love and safety, and he held her warm hand. They drifted to a beautiful valley with green meadows, up a hill where she heard music and laughter. At the top, she saw people picnicking, a stream, ducks, and animals. A group of women ran to hug her, making her feel loved. They returned to the hospital room. She saw her body on the bed and her crying mother. The man comforted her mother, saying Mary would be alright. Mary woke from the coma with no permanent damage and was called a miracle child. After the NDE, she felt different with fewer fears and developed strong intuition. She saw ghosts and received signs from loved ones. This led her to study shamanism, feng shui, and space clearing. She shifted from a business career in real estate to writing books on recognizing signs from departed loved ones and trusting inner guidance. She now speaks to grieving families to share her knowledge and help them connect with those who have passed.
“warm and i felt very safe and i wasn't valley it was um we were coming across a”
The account's strongest evidence is the accurate description of an unknown deceased grandfather (died before birth) who comforted the mother by name during the coma, verified by mother's immediate shocked confirmation. High score driven by unpredictability of unknown relative and detailed self-reported verification, limited by same-room OBE and delayed reporting 3 years later.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
