Life After Death: Experiences of a Medium | Bettina-Suvi Rode's Near Death Experiences
What Researchers Found
The Story
Bettina Rode, a medium, had three near-death experiences due to surgical complications. The first occurred at age nine during an appendix operation with breathing pauses. The second happened during biliary surgery when her seven-month-old daughter was alive, caused by an aneurysm and blood loss. The third followed a C-section birth of her second daughter, after her mother's death, when she stopped breathing. In the first, she left her body, saw herself at a Finnish lake, met a bright light and her great-grandmother telepathically, who said it was not her time. In the second, she floated above her body, entered a light with colors and sounds, met welcoming people, reviewed her life feeling remorse for past actions, and chose to return for her daughter. In the third, she met loved ones and animals, visited a hall of knowledge, met her spirit guide who said she had a mission, saw her daughters' futures, and returned despite wanting to stay. After these, Rode embraced her mediumship abilities, quit her mining sales job to become a professional medium, helped grieving people connect with the deceased, wrote a book on her experiences, gained resilience, and lost fear of death.
“The light was pulsating, glowing towards me and I felt infinite joy within me. An unknown woman appeared out of this light, which made no sense to me.”
The account describes multiple NDEs during surgeries with severe medical crises including clinical death, and includes some OBE perceptions of operating room events and dialogues, but lacks any reported verification of these perceptions, resulting in low scores on verification criteria that limit overall evidential strength.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
