The Story
In March 1983, the chief engineer of a research vessel faced rough 25-30 foot seas off the California coast. The captain sent him in a Zodiac boat to shuttle engineers to shore. The boat entered breakers, flipped, and he drowned in frigid water. He left his body and entered a peaceful void of absolute darkness. A pinprick of light appeared, and he moved toward it, feeling waves of love. The light consisted of millions of moving fragments like schooling fish. Three fragments greeted him as soul family, welcoming him home. He became a light fragment, and more joined them. They entered a spherical area for a life review, where he relived events from his and others' perspectives, seeing ripples from actions, especially loving ones. The review extended to a future corridor showing free will choices. The light told him it was not his time and he must return for a purpose. He accepted and re-entered his body as wreckage pulled it up. His crew rescued him after 15-18 minutes, and they swam a mile to shore. After the NDE, he gained a sense of soul family from past lifetimes and a deeper view of God as omnipresent in everything. He focused on living authentically, connecting to his higher nature, and recognizing shared divine purpose.

This NDE includes a severe drowning episode with an OBE claim of observing specific details about the experiencer's own body during unconsciousness, such as a bow line wrapping around the arm and dislocating the shoulder. However, there are no reports of verification by rescuers, unpredictable or hidden details, or timely pre-verification reporting, limiting evidential strength to moderate.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
