The Story
Nicole Gruel was a 14-year-old girl who had a near-death experience while whitewater rafting in New Zealand. The boat tipped over after a 32-foot waterfall, pushing her deep into the dark water. She realized it was her last breath and became calm. In the blackness, she saw a horizon of light. Her living grandmother and deceased dog approached her from the light. She thought it was unusual. A clear male voice next to her head said, 'Nicole, remember to breathe.' This reminded her to curl into a ball because of her life jacket. She floated up to the surface and took a breath. Rescuers pulled her into the boat just before she entered a cave. As a child, Nicole accepted the event without much change. Later in life, she recognized it as an NDE, joined the community, earned a PhD in transpersonal psychology, and used it to understand ancestral support, grieve losses, and help others with spiritual experiences. She now lives with more joy and agency.
This NDE lacks any veridical perception claims, featuring only internal visions of a light horizon, living grandmother, deceased dog, and a guiding voice while drowning, with no descriptions of external events, staff, or verifiable details. No attempts at verification or corroborated elements undermine evidential strength.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
