"The Darkness Turned to Beaming Light“ | Helmut Gombocz' Near-Death Experience
What Researchers Found
The Story
Helmut Gombocz, a 12-year-old boy in 1960, fell 10 meters from a hayloft on a farm, suffered a clavicle fracture, and experienced clinical death before revival. During surgery, he inhaled too much ether anesthesia, leading to another clinical death and a seven-day coma. He left his body and ascended rapidly like a rocket without looking down. He became a small dot, entered a dark essence, sank while seeing faces, then glowed and rose into shadowless light. He felt pure bliss, knowledge of a loving God, and oneness with no inside or outside. He viewed Earth, saw humans acting from ignorance with lights or fog around their heads, and realized forgiveness for unknowing actions. He wished to return and share this knowledge. After waking, he felt the body uncomfortable but gained insights into consciousness. He kept experiences private in the post-war era but later shared them through books, seminars, and founding the Konhell Academy to promote awareness and conscious living. He pursued engineering, painting, a long marriage, and co-founded a museum.
“no perimeters, everything is open. Everything that is, exists and everything that is not, exists as well. That, again, is really difficult to imagine.”
This NDE features a profound spiritual journey with claims of clinical death and coma, but lacks any veridical perceptions of specific, verifiable details from an impossible vantage point like observing surgery or hidden events. No attempts at verification or corroborated observations are described, limiting evidential strength.
Score reflects verifiable perceptions reported. A low score indicates the experience was primarily spiritual or subjective, not that it didn't occur.
Score reflects transformation as described. Domains scored 0 indicate the topic was not discussed, not that no change occurred.
Are you here because someone you love has died?
These accounts were gathered because death may not be the end. Thousands of people have experienced something beyond — and come back to tell us about it.
